PPAP is Production Part Approval Process, the mention of PPAP, most will think that it is related to automotive & aerospace and not required in other industries.
The objective of the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) is to:
- Confirm that a supplier is capable of meeting the manufacturability and quality standards for the components provided to the customer.
- Offer proof that the supplier comprehends and adheres to the engineering design records and specification requirements set forth by the customer.
- Show that the defined manufacturing process is capable of producing the part consistently in accordance with all requirements throughout the actual production run at the specified production rate of the manufacturing process.
In today’s world, many other industries are using PPAP as a tool for establishing confidence in component suppliers and their production processes.
Just that, they may not be so stringent and asked for a lower submission level (total 5 PPAP submission levels)
Although PPAP was developed in 1993, but it was only in recent years that industries aside from automotive starts to implement it as part of their system.
Thus it is a must for every company to learn and know how to prepare PPAP to be in tune with today’s quality expectations from customers.
The preparation & presentation of PPAP reflects our process capability, our process & quality knowledge, the standards & mindset of our Quality & Engineering team, and importantly the reputation of our company.
The disadvantage of PPAP is that it can be time-consuming for the preparers, resources are needed to focus and prepare the complete set of documents.
But this does not give us the excuse to prepare this set of report haphazardly.
Put yourself in the customers’ shoes if you were to ask for a outgoing inspection report from your suppliers/supporting partners, you would expect a certain standard report coming from your supporting partner.
If the report that you received is not up to a certain standard, you will still give your supporting partner a chance to revise and guide them along such that they will improve.
However, if the report that you receive is to the extent of nonsensical, will you still want to work with such a supporting partner in the future?
For KANOU, we prepared many PPAPs before but this is our 1st PPAP for a customized Cover Glass made of Gorilla Corning Glass with Anti-Reflective & Anti-Fingerprint coating coupled with silkscreen & IR print.
